What do people look like when they’re at their most vulnerable? With this photo series, I attempt to answer this.
I wanted to explore the different ways in which people respond to being scared and showcase how wide, varied, and personal this experience is. I accomplished this set of photos and this video montage by asking people to let me interview them on how art influences our daily lives. Setting up a time to meet, I lured unsuspecting participants to watch a TedTalk intercut with a clip from a popular movie to frighten them.
To me, no emotion is more varied in its expression on people than that of being scared. You can’t fake being caught off guard. People can scream, run, hide, or even laugh. Because of this, being scared is the most vulnerable a person can be. You show what your true human nature is in the moment you find yourself within the fight or flight response. It is in these brief, vulnerable moments that we are able to come together to fully connect and understand one-another.
